![]() ![]() It is not a sin to cut your hair for two reasons. While the Bible does not lay out a list of explicit words to steer clear from, it is clear that Christians are to stay away from “filthy language,” “unwholesome talk,” and “crude joking.” Christians are instructed to keep from being polluted by the world and to reflect the image of God, therefore Christians should not … Some Christians interpret this commandment to mean it’s a sin to yell out “Jesus Christ!” unless Jesus were to actually appear in front of you. One eternal or unforgivable sin (blasphemy against the Holy Spirit) is specified in several passages of the Synoptic Gospels, including Mark 3:28–29, Matthew 12:31–32, and Luke 12:10. The word gosh is one of many words like that: dang, heck, jeez. You are deliberately not taking the Lord’s name in vain. Is it a sin to say OMG or “Oh My Gosh?” If you believe that saying “oh, my God” is a sin, then saying “oh, my gosh” is a way of avoiding that sin. In order to avoid saying “God “which is considered blasphemous, particularly by Christians, people used alternative phrases like oh my goodness and oh my word. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The phrase probably has its origins in John 1:1 of the Bible. “Dammit” and “damn it” are routinely used by most people, including government officials, teachers, TV hosts, children, etc. In Canada, it is not considered a serious “swear word”, although technically I guess it could be considered “cursing” to some 90-year-old grannies. “Darn it” is simply a substitute for the phrase “damn it”, and therefore, when saying “darn it!”, you are just saying “damn it!” with a slight change to the word to make yourself feel better, even though you mean the same thing. ”Gosh”, “golly”, “gee”, “geez”, “holy smoke”, and the like are all “nice” exclamations. No it is a polite alternative to a rude word. Words like gosh and golly, both dating back to the 1700s, served as euphemisms for God. “If you say something like ‘Oh my God,’ then you’re using His name in vain, but if you’re saying something like OMG it’s not really using the Lord’s name in vain because you’re not saying ‘Oh my God. Of the three, gosh is recorded the earliest, around 1750–60. Where did golly, gosh, and gee come from? While this folksy trio are informal interjections, they are also euphemistic alterations of the word God or, in the case of gee, Jesus. (euphemistic) God! Used to express mild surprise or wonder. ‘Golly,’ he says, ‘Isn’t it exciting!’ Some people say by golly to emphasize that something did happen or should happen. Some people say golly to indicate that they are very surprised by something. “Let’s Put It All Together” (Hugo & Luigi, George David Weiss). ![]() “Heavy Fallin’ Out” (Hugo & Luigi, George David Weiss).“You’re a Big Girl Now” (Marty Bryant, Robert Douglas).R&B/Soul What was the Stylistics Greatest Hits? an exclamation of mild surprise or wonder. SMART Vocabulary: related words and phrases. Used to say “yes” very strongly, or to show that you are very sure about something: Were there surprises? You betcha. That small hiccup aside, this is a well-arranged, nicely selected collection of some of Bell's finest tunes, performed by some of contemporary jazz's best.Thom Bell Who wrote bet you by Golly Wow? The latter features some lovely piano work by Baldwin. The only cut that doesn't work here is "Bell & Creed," an overly sentimental tribute to the songwriter and producer Linda Creed, Bell's production partner at Philly International. A sweet, uptempo reading of "I'll Be Around" features the soprano saxophone of Marion Meadows, as does the closer "People Make the World Go Round," played as an elegant groover. Downing's voice may be a bit lower 20 years later, but it's lost none of its expressiveness. Vivian Green's vocals grace a fine reading of "La-La Means I Love You." Gerald Albright, Downing, and Baldwin reprise their cover of "Break Up to Make Up" from 1993. Ragan Whiteside and Paul Brown - on flutes and guitars respectively - funk things up a bit on "The Rubberband Man," with Baldwin's piano slipping the lyric line in between in the stepping groove. "Didn't I (Blow Your Mind This Time)," features Russ Freeman's guitar holding court on the melody. The three producers have enlisted a star-studded cast to create a seamless, warm, and elegant selection of Bell tunes. As has been typical of his own recordings for the past two decades, Baldwin plays multiple instruments, from drums and bass to keyboards. Co-produced by Bob Baldwin, Will Downing, and former Bell sideman Preston Glass, Betcha by Golly Wow is a second chapter for Baldwin and Downing the first was Never Can Say Goodbye: A Tribute to Michael Jackson in 2009. Given songwriter and producer Thom Bell's legendary reputation, it's difficult to believe that this is the first contemporary jazz record to pay tribute to his work. ![]()
